For purchase is a pair of vintage Moss Brothers equestrian leather tall black riding boots. I didn't know much about them until I did a bit of research. Moss Brothers is a company in London that started as a second-hand clothing store and progressed into military wear, saddlery and finally men's clothing. There's a lot more that happened in between there, but that's the gist.I purchased these at an estate sale. I initially was interested in them to wear but when I realized they were too small (I'm a size women's 9) I decided to use them in my French Country decor. Yet I've been cleaning house and going for a minimalist look so these are in the to-go pile. I can't be certain of the date of these boots other than taking a wild guess that it could have been as early as 1920 just based on the history of the company and what they were manufacturing at the time...or as late as the 1950's. Please know that's a complete guess only! I can't be certain of the size but my best guess is a UK 5 in men's. There is writing on the inside of each boot which you can review in the photos. Here is what it reads:
Both the left and right boot contain the following:
Stamped: Moss Brothers / Covent Garden
In handwritten pen underneath that is:
447934
1501
Calf 14 1/2
5
My guess is the 5 printed on the inside of the boot is the UK size.
That would equate to a US men's 6.5 - 7 and a women's 8'ish
Boot opening diameter: About 5"
Length of boot footbed: About 10"
There is a slight uptick on the outside of the boot and a dip down on the inside which you can review in the pictures. The boot shaft is narrow.
These boots could use a good cleaning and polishing but I'm leaving that to the new owner as I did not want to damage them. There are definitely stains and discolorations on the inside as well as some smudging on the outside. Yet they are in pretty good condition, stitching seems to be all intact. The discoloration on the calf leather appear to be as a result of the bootstraps mounted on the inside. I'm no cobbler, but It looks like nails are used in the heel of these boots noted in one of the pictures.
Plastic boot trees came with these when I purchased them and have remained inside. They are included.
